Can you imagine some of the world’s worst terrorists being held here in America, in Illinois, in the 6th district? What if one escaped? It’s no secret that drug gang lords can effectively operate their organizations from prison, communicating with the outside world with ease. In fact, prison has become a training ground for violent drug gangs. Do we want to grant Al Qaeda terrorists the same favor? And what kind of terror might come from a cross-pollination of Al Qaeda and drug gangs?

That’s a quote from an editorial posted on Peter Roskam’s House web site. The piece is entitled “Pelosi is Playing Politics with our National Security”. If that isn’t the pot calling the kettle black, I don’t know what is.

Roskam’s stance is first and foremost part of his general strategy of making things difficult for President Obama in every possible way. He is a vigorous participant in the Republican politics of “No”. He has no qualms about sabtoaging our national effort to recover from the miserable Bush years for political gain.  He has demonstrated repeatedly in his brief career that he will do or say pretty much anything to win. You will recall how in the last election he attempted to tie himself to Obama’s coat tails in a successful attempt to regain his seat. He never had any intention of supporting the Obama agenda but he wanted you to think so.

But beyond politics, Roskam seems to be a true believer in torture, in rendition to torture, in endless detention without trial or the ability to know the evidence against you, in the ability of the state to eavesdrop on its citizens without warrant, in the power of the President to do whatever he wants with accountability to no one.  I infer this from the fact that he never opened his mouth in protest through the worst of the Bush abuses of power. Not once.  Roskam always gave his willing “rubber stamp” of approval.

Now President Obama would like to restore the rule of law. But Roskam and his Republican cronies want to make it difficult, if not impossible, for him to do so.  They plan to do this by scaring you, and, so far, they seem to be meeting with some success. The Democratic leadership in Congress appears to be falling into their trap.

Don’t let Roskam and his kind scare you stupid.  We have the ability to securely detain dangerous criminals securely within our boundaries. We have the ability to segregate terrorists from the general prison population. We even have a town in Montana that would like nothing more than to help resolve the problem of detention. But that’s putting the cart before the horse. Our legal tradition of over 200 years demands that before we brand someone as a criminal (or a terrorist) that there be a fair trial. Roskam would like to trash that tradition. Don’t let him do it.

Call Peter Roskam and let him know that you are not scared and that the rule of law must prevail.  You can reach him at (202) 225-4561 in Washington or at (630) 893-9670 in Bloomingdale.

The United States Chamber of Commerce recently honored Peter Roskam for proving in his first term to be “an effective ally to the business community”.

Sounds great until you realize what exactly “being an effective ally to the business community” means.

Put simply, it means consistently voting against the interests of the majority of citizens in your district and giving big business exactly what it demands.

It means means Roskam voting against reducing the dependence on fossil fuels that is threatening our national security and destroying our environment by requiring minimum standards for the percentage of electricity generated using renewable sources of energy.

It means Roskam voting against tax incentives for energy conservation and development of clean, renewable energy sources because they are funded by the repeal of tax breaks to big oil companies now enjoying huge profits at our expense every time we fill up our tanks.

It means Roskam voting against the Children’s Health and Medicare Protection Act of 2007 which would have insured that Illinois’ uninsured children receive the kind of health care that Roskam’s own kids get at taxpayer expense.

It means Roskam standing up for the interests of big drug companies rather than allowing the Medicare program to negotiate for better prices on prescription drugs.

It means Roskam voting against protection of his constituents right to equal pay for equal work. And their right to organize.

And it means Roskam voting against protecting middle class taxpayers from the Alternative Minimum Tax.

So congratulations on your big award, Peter, and thanks for nothing. Its time we had a new Representative in Congress who works for us and not for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Peter Roskam ranks among the nation’s worst Congressmen, at least when it comes to his voting record on issues affecting middle class Americans.

This according to the TheMiddleClass.org 2007 Congressional Scorecard issued this month by the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy, a non-partisan progressive think tank.

Roskam scored an F on the scorecard based upon his record of consistently voting against measures directed at improving the lot of middle class and low-income Americans including:

  • Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2007
  • Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007
  • Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007
  • Clean Energy Act of 2007
  • Employee Free Choice Act of 2007
  • Children’s Health Insurance Program Re-authorization Act of 2007
  • Shareholder Vote on Executive Compensation Act of 2007
  • College Cost Reduction Act of 2007
  • Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2007
  • Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act of 2007
  • Temporary Tax Relief Act of 2007

Roskam chose to spend his first year in office pursuing the interests of the wealthiest residents of his district and of large corporations while actively working against legislation that would help the majority of his constituents whose means are more modest. All the while, Roskam railed against the Democrats in Congress for their supposed obstruction. It is clear from this impressive list of no votes that it was Roskam and his Republican colleagues who were attempting to throw up roadblocks.

Illinois Senators Barack Obama and Dick Durbin both scored highly on middle class issues, earning an A+ and an A, respectively.

Republicans are starting to get nervous about Roskam’s prospects this fall, Given Roskam’s appalling voting record and dismissive attitude toward his constituents, I don’t think a successful challenge is impossible.

There is finally a sign of impending activity at Jill Morgenthaler’s campaign website. I hope that we will soon see her taking Roskam to task for his performance.

Peter Roskam sided again today with corporate interests and with George Bush and voted no on a major Democratic initiative to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, improve the fuel efficiency of the cars we drive, and begin to address the problem of global climate change which is threatening our very existence.

Roskam and most of his Republican colleagues voted against the Energy Independence and Security Act because it provided for the repeal of a tax break with which the Republicans had gifted Big Oil back in 2005 when they were in the majority. Roskam’s vote was yet another “rubber stamp” of George Bush’s policies (Bush has threatened to veto the bll if it is approved in the Senate) and the latest example of Roskam’s pattern of consitently favoring corporate interests over the welfare of his constituency.

The bill, which passed in the House despite Roskam’s vote, would if enacted into law:

  • Raise overall automotive fuel efficiency standards to 35 mpg for cars, trucks, and SUVs by the year 2020, a 40% increase over present rates
  • Require electric utilities to generate at least 15% of their power output from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy, also by 2020
  • Require the increased use of biofuels such as ethanol
  • Provide tax breaks for energy efficiency and for the use of renewable fuels
  • Offset the cost of those tax breaks by repealing previous tax breaks given to big oil companies by the Bush Administration and the previous Republican Congress
  • Provide assistance to small businesses in conserving energy
  • Train workers for jobs, such as retrofitting of buildings, that promote greater energy efficiency
  • Begin to address the threat of global warming by increasing efficiency in our use of fossil fuels

An analysis of the proposed renewable energy standards for utilities prepared by the Union of Concerned Scientists suggests that the standards could save U.S. consumers as much as $18 billion in energy costs each year, in addition to the $24 billion in savings from improved automobile fuel economy.

The Republicans still hope to stop the bill in the Senate, perhaps using a filibuster. If not, Bush will likely veto the bill, then try to blame the Democrats for not getting any thing done. This is their game plan, obstruct then accuse. But these guys are in the pocket of the oil companies and I think most Americans will be smart enough to recognize it.
